    Inter Faith Week School Activities

    At Kepier we are celebrating inter-faith week and have a variety of activities, speakers and live music that learners in years 7, 8 and 9 will have an opportunity to participate in over the week. Some of the activities include: decorating Diya Lamps learning about Hindu traditions; speakers from the Islamic Diversity Centre and the Sikh community will talk to learners about their faith with activities for learners to help them understand their tradition; ‘IGNITE’, and the Christian rock band ‘Social Bean’ will give a concert; and our school chef will serve an extra choice on the menu each day reflecting different faith traditions.     We have plans in place for a week of activities across the five boroughs that make up Pennine Care Foundation Trust. These include Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Bury and Rochdale. We will be having a stall in each borough with a lots of information about the different faith including copies of our new Faith and Culture booklet which will help staff understand the faiths, beliefs and culture of our service users and their carers.     During Inter Faith Week, we welcomed Mike Hackleton (Methodist), Reverend Jackie Maw (Anglican), Muhammed Bahar (Islam), Sunitha, Gayarthri and Avy (Hinduism), and Jonathon Bluestone (Judaism).

    The focus was festivals, and they each talked about different festivals in their religions, including Christmas, Easter, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hanukkah, Diwali and Holi. We sampled delicious Indian food, danced to Indian music, explored religious artefacts, listened to Jewish music, and made Eid cards. The children have been making links between the different religions and their festivals, and we learnt that Hinduism has a lot of festivals!…

A small group, comprising members of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities, spent a morning cooking curry for one hundred of their guests, ably led by Near Neighbours coordinator Kaneez Khan. …

    In Basingstoke an Inter Faith Dinner was held. It was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Basingstoke and Deane Cllr Paul Miller and Mrs Sandra Miller, as well as Chief Inspector Scott Johnson. Other attendees included the Imam from Basingstoke mosque and members of the Muslim communities, representatives of different Christian churches and members of the Hindu and Sikh communities. Also present were representatives of Basingstoke’s chaplaincies, including the Hospital Chaplaincy, the Town Centre Chaplaincy, Street Pastors and the police chaplaincy. The meal was provided by members of the Turkish community, with the theme of the meal being “Faith Awareness” in reference to the Basingstoke community. …
