Championing Inter Faith Week
Communities across Westmorland and Furness are being encouraged to come together to celebrate diversity, build dialogue, and foster mutual understanding as part of National Inter Faith Week.
The Mayor of Kendal, Councillor Helen Ladhams, and the Chair of the Westmorland and Furness Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Partnership, Councillor Guy Tirvengadum, have voiced their support for Inter Faith Week 2026.
Inter Faith Week, held each November annually, brings together people of different faiths and beliefs, alongside those of no faith. Its central aims are to strengthen interfaith relations, increase awareness of diverse faith and belief communities, and encourage greater understanding between people from religious and non-religious backgrounds.
Councillor Tirvengadum described the national initiative as an important opportunity to celebrate the rich tapestry of faiths, beliefs and cultures represented locally and across the UK. He said:
“Across the UK, Inter Faith Week helps to strengthen relationships between people of different faiths and beliefs, increase understanding, challenge prejudice and build a society based on mutual respect and inclusion. Nationally, it provides a valuable platform for dialogue, learning and cooperation, reminding us that our differences should be a source of strength rather than division.”
He added that, in Westmorland and Furness, the week offers a practical way for people from all backgrounds to meet, share experiences, build friendships and work together for the common good.
“It helps to foster a stronger sense of belonging, promotes community cohesion and demonstrates how people of faith and none can contribute positively to creating welcoming, compassionate and resilient communities for everyone.”
Mayor of Kendal Councillor Helen Ladhams also gave her wholehearted support to Inter Faith Week. Reflecting on conflict and division in the world, she highlighted the value of creating opportunities for people to listen to one another and speak openly.
“Inter Faith Week gives people of different faiths, and those of no faith, a chance to listen to one another and talk openly. It helps us understand our differences and celebrate what we share.” 
Councillor Ladhams said that these conversations strengthen relationships and bring communities closer together, both locally and further afield. She added that she was grateful for the invitation to attend this November’s interfaith event as Mayor of Kendal and looks forward to being there.
The Westmorland and Furness Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Partnership is encouraging local community groups, places of worship, schools and civic organisations to take part in Inter Faith Week 2026 by holding events and showcasing how cooperation across different beliefs can strengthen community life.
