Weaving and Wisdom
Tuesday 12 November 11.00 – 17.00
The Exchange Blackburn, 71-73 King William Street, Blackburn, BB1 7DT
Rugs woven by groups of women from different faiths, around the theme of wisdom, and textiles from the Gawthorpe collection, showing designs from different cultures and traditions, on display together at the Exchange.
One set is a collection of rugs from the Touchstone Centre, Bradford, woven in wool by groups of women from different faiths, in the UK and in Pakistan. Each group was asked to consider: Who are the wise women that have influenced my life? Who are the wise women in my holy text and faith tradition? and What is the wisest piece of advice I have been given? Based on the conversations they had had together each group was then provided with a pack of materials with which to make a rug. Groups have included interfaith forums, schools, Girls Brigade groups and even a book group. The resulting rugs are stunning and have given great opportunities to women who are often side-lined in more formal interfaith dialogue. These rugs give a living testimony to inter faith dialogue, to the place of wisdom in the lives and traditions of different women and – made with different techniques - they are a physical continuation of the history of the woollen industry in this country.
Come and see how these tell stories of tradition, faith, history and place.
Tuesday's event: Public viewing, plus Indian dancing and food.
