St Mary’s Students Poppy Walk
Monday 11 November 11.00 – 13.00
St Mary's Church, Church Street, Slough, SL1 1PJ
The Student Poppy Walk in Slough involves St. Mary's Primary School which is in the centre of town and has 600 pupils on roll. The demographic reflects the diversity of the town centre with a majority being Muslim.
Every year Y6 (90 pupils) come to the church and after a short prayer at 11 around the town memorial in the church grounds the pupils are "let loose" over the churchyard with hand made poppies. These poppies contain poems and / or prayers. They seek out the War Grave Commission war graves - about 30 - 40 and place their poppies on them. They will also often find family graves with people who died in the wars as well. The poppies stay there until the wind takes them sometimes they stay for the whole year!
