Hidden History of Faith; The Working Class Victorian Muslim - With Jewish and Christian Footsteps
Thursday 12 November 11.00 – 12.00
ONLINE TALK: Victorian England; Robert Stanley was a respectable, northern working-class man.
He grew up within Ashton’s Christian Israelite sect – who strictly followed Jewish (Mosaic) Law.
Robert was self-educated and became a grocer and tea-trader. He joined the Church of England and made it his mission to tackle injustice. He rose to become one of Britain’s first working-class magistrates and mayors, witnessing first-hand some of the most violent riots and progressive reforms of the Victorian era.
In 1898, aged 69, he took the astonishing decision to convert to Islam. And his family covered up his life, for 100 years.
