Education and Religion SIG seminar: Art, Faith and Education

Monday 4 November 17.30 – 19.00

UCL Institute of Education (IOE), 20 Bedford Way, Room 537, London, WC1H 0AL

Art can foster dialogue between faith and non-faith communities, while running the risk of misrepresentation. This Education and Religion SIG Seminar brings together two speakers who are immersed in using the arts to challenge assumptions in formal and informal educational contexts.

Alia Azougbi will present her work as Head of HEC Global Learning Centre in schools and museums. With a strong commitment to challenge the notion of faith communities as homogeneous, "Nothing About Me Without Me", promotes the importance of working closely with individuals to maintain the integrity of authentic voices. Alia's role as an educator and storyteller in school and community settings draws on her insights into collaboration and pedagogy. Working with teachers to support students' experiences of learning about migration, the scope of Alia's work extends to her involvement with the curators of the new Albukhary Gallery of Islamic Arts at the British Museum, where public education and museum education for schools meet.

Laura Moffat is director of Art + Christianity, an organisation that seeks to foster and explore the dialogue between art and religious traditions. Through projects, events, publications and consultations the organisation has forged collaborations and partnerships with galleries, art institutions and places of worship as ways to address current issues such as migration and community relations. Laura will present Art + Christianity's projects with faith and non-faith communities and an alternative provision in a London school. She will also share the work of commissioned artists and art historians who have raised awareness of the diversity of historical and contemporary art in churches.
