Sunday 19 November
To mark Mitzvah Day and Inter Faith Week, 12 Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Humanist volunteers, including Rev David Stephenson from All Saints West Dulwich are helping Care4Calais and the Dunkirk Refugee Women's Centre. Thanks to so many people's generosity, we took 5 cars packed with donations. The interfaith initiative was instigated by Jewish Labour Movement.
After sorting items in the Care4Calais warehouse and dropping donations at the Women's Centre, we went to Dunkirk. It was cold and pouring with rain. We handed out coats, jumpers and cake to over 150 refugees. Most queuing were young men, who told us how they're hounded by police, have fled war and are desperate. There were little children with parents and a 15 year boy. All polite, many spoke English, none had a bed for the night. We ran out of items. We left cold and damp, in the knowledge we would at least get a hot shower, meal and undisturbed sleep.
