National Faith Communities and Inter Faith Week

Inter Faith Week offers a valuable opportunity to make the public more aware of your faith community and of the important contribution which it makes to wider society – locally, nationally and internationally. It is also a time to highlight your important work to develop and deepen good inter faith relations – to strengthen existing bonds of understanding and cooperation and to explore new ones.

National faith community leaders used the 2009 Inter Faith Week in England to affirm their support for inter faith engagement and their commitment to working alongside all of good will for the well being of society. For further information, please click herepdf_button.

If you plan to hold events, you may wish to let the IFN office know at an early stage so that they can be given good profile and to help minimise diary clashes.

Some ideas for Inter Faith Week emerging from the faith communities’ engagement with the Week over its first two years are below.

You could...
  • Host special events or invite members of other faith traditions to join in high profile events
  • Hold or participate in national level inter faith conversations, dialogues and joint social action projects
  • Consider initiating dialogue or a social cooperation project with a community or denomination within a national faith community with which your community has not, to date, yet engaged closely
  • Produce Inter Faith Week resource material for your website
  • Include a message or video on your website from senior figures in the community to spread the word about the Week and its aims
  • Use established communication channels to encourage local members to take part in Inter Faith Week events being run locally and to consider running their own events such as ‘place of worship open door days’
  • Suggest to any education or training institutions linked to your faith community that they mark the Week and use it to increase learning and skills development for inter faith engagement
  • Ask your clergy and other senior figures to talk about the themes of the Week in sermons or addresses
  • Encourage any social responsibility and social justice network with a link to your community to use Inter Faith Week as an opportunity to broaden the reach of their project by entering into practical partnership with projects run by other faith communities
  • Encourage newspapers and magazines with a link to your community to run a feature or interview relating to Inter Faith Week or its themes
