Events

Inter Faith Week took place from 15 to 21 November across England. A national launch event took place on 12 November.

Many exciting events were held by national, regional and local bodies around the country.

This page carries information about a selection of national and regional launch events. The regional faith forums acted as sources of information on local events in their respective regions. Sunday 15 November

Event:  Seminar:  “Young British and Believer”

Host Body:  Joseph Interfaith Foundation and the Islamic Cultural Centre 

Description:  A half day Seminar for Muslim and Jewish University and sixth form students.  The discussion will focus on the key question:  “why should we live peacefully with people of other faiths today?”

Event:  Open day at Jinalay (Jain Temple)

Host Body:  The Institute of Jainology, Jain Community of the UK and the Oshwal Association of the UK

Description:  The temple will be open for visitors and there will be three guided tours during the day.

Event:  A Sea of Stories

Host Body:  St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace

Description:  Come and be enchanted by a talented troupe of storytellers from diverse faith backgrounds, brought together by St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace.

Event:  Interfaith Volunteer Challenge

Host Body: Inter Faith Action

Description:  During Inter Faith Week, Interfaith Action will help students at 16 universities to organise an Interfaith Volunteer Challenge. Over two days, students from different religious/non-religious backgrounds will volunteer together around the country, in total completing 1000 hours of volunteering.

Event:  Four ‘Faith Evenings’

Host Body:  United Religions Initiative (UK)

Description:  Four ‘Faith Evenings’, under the theme ‘Beyond Faith Boundaries’ locations during Inter Faith Week.  These events will enable people of different faith backgrounds to come together and gain a positive inter faith experience.

Event:  Children of Abraham – Jewish-Muslim Scriptural Reasoning
Host Body:  Interfaith Alliance UK, Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, Islamic Cultural Centre and London Central Mosque, Scriptural Reasoning, Liberal Judaism, the Movement for Reform Judaism, Leo Baeck College and Children of Abraham
Description:  This event will be a special opportunity to read together and discuss Jewish and Islamic sacred texts, aiming to build understanding and respect for religious differences.

Description: A by invitation discussion to provide an opportunity for shared reflection on the extent to which there may be meeting points between religious traditions and the Humanist tradition.

Event:  Scriptural Reasoning demonstration
Description:  This is a demonstration of the dynamic and evolving inter-faith practice in which Jews, Christians and Muslims meet to study their sacred Scriptures together.

Artifice:  Inter Cultural Dialogue Through the Arts
Host Body:  Three Faiths Forum, JCC for London, Radical Middle Way and Arts and Christianity Enquiry 
Description: 
An evening of visual art, music, video, spoken word, graffiti and dialogue about culture, faith and identity.  Artists from different traditions using different forms of expression taking over and transforming a space.  This event is linked to Inter Faith Week and the Charter for Compassion.

Wednesday 18 November

Event:  Faith in the Region

Host Body:  East of England Faiths Council

Description:  Networking event for inter faith groups, public sector officers and support organisations.  This is an opportunity to meet others from around the region, gather information, and make contacts.  The event is free of charge and refreshments will be provided.

Event:  Debate

Host Body:  Cambridge Union

Description:  The Cambridge Union is holding a debate on the motion “This house believes that faith is essential to the democratic debate.”  Confirmed speakers so far are Dr Peter Cave, Chair of the Humanist Philosophers Group, and Dr Jonathan Chaplin and Kirby Laing from the Institute for Christian Ethics; Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra, the Chair of the Interfaith Relations Committee of the Muslim Council of Britain, Vivian Wineman, President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and Samantha Stein, the Director of Camp Quest UK.  The debate costs £5.

Event:  Lily Montagu Memorial Lecture 2009:  Is Scripture Still “Holy”?  - Coming of Age with the Bible

Description:  Lecture by Rev Dr Anthony Harvey, formerly Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey, discussing modern attitudes to the Bible in the light of critical challenges and scientific thinking, especially Darwinism. Response by Rabbi Dr David Goldberg, and discussion.

Description:  An official launch event for Inter Faith Week in partnership with the Inter Faith Network.

Event:  Regional Launch Event

Host Body:  West Midlands Faiths Forum

Description:  The focus of the evening will be to celebrate and recognise the value of inter faith work in the region.  There will be stands, live music and a inter faith photography exhibition that visually celebrates the wide range of Inter Faith work that has taken place throughout the region.
